About the statue:
Bronze on concrete. The statue was put down as a memorial for the Earl and Minister of State Maurice Lippens, founder of Knokke.
About the Artist:
Octave-François-Joseph Rotsaert was born in Bruges on July 21st 1885. He received his secondary schooling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges, in 1902-1903, he studied ‘technical drawing’ in the department stone dressing.
In 1904-1905, he took the course “modelling upon antique heads” and “anatomy” taught by Gustaaf Pickery and drawing from antique heads” taught by Pierre Raoux. From July 1932 until August 5th 1950, he worked as a teacher “sculpturing and anatomy” at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges.
