About the artwork

This war memorial for the military and civilian victims of the First and Second World Wars also includes a memorial stone for the victims of the Dachau concentration camp. The entire statue is made out of white natural stone. It was purchased in 1921 and refers to the trench warfare that took place along the Yser.

About the artist

The artist began studying sculpture at the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts. While studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, he worked in Alexander Falguière’s studio on the decoration of the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. His work is strongly influenced by French art and the exotic.
